External coating (single/dual layer FBE and 3-layer)

Fusion bonded epoxy (FBE) is a high performance coating applied by electrostatic powder spray. Many projects are successfully coated by using a stand-alone FBE, however in certain cases, dependent upon final pipeline conditions, a secondary abrasion resistant overcoat (ARO) is applied on top of the FBE. This offers additional mechanical protection. ARO is also applied by powder spray method.

3 layer external coatings have a single (primer) layer of fusion bonded epoxy, usually with a lower thickness than stand alone FBE, a 2nd layer of adhesive (copolymer) and a 3rd (top) layer of high density polyethylene or polypropylene applied.

The epoxy primer (FBE) in the form of a powder is applied by electrostatic spray onto the hot pipe surface. The second coat, the adhesive, is applied onto the primed surface either in the form of a melt by extrusion or sprayed in the form of a powder. The polyethylene layer is applied by extrusion onto the molten adhesive layer. If the pipe diameter is small, the polyethylene & adhesive layers are applied onto the pipe travelling through a cross-head die. In the case of larger diameter pipes 2 flat film dies produce the 2 layers (adhesive/ HDPE), which are wrapped around the helical rotating pipe with application either from the top or from the bottom. After the application and curing of the coating is completed, the pipe is cooled using both internal and external water quenching.

Coating application is performed in accordance with CAN/CSA-Z245.20, CAN/CSA-Z245.21, NFA 49710, DIN 30670 & EN 10285 international standards. External blast cleaning stations, gas & induction heating, extrusion, powder application, end cleaning and porosity (holiday) detection are also within our scope of supply as with a full range of chemical pre-treatment stations including alkaline de-greasing, phosphoric acid (chlorides removal) & chromatic acid (chromate conversion coating).
